Sonohysterography
Sonohysterography, also called fluid ultrasound, is a
simple technique for obtaining an image of the uterine cavity.
It is usually performed in a doctor's office without anesthesia.
Ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs, may be given to reduce cramping.
A thin catheter is introduced into the uterus. A transvaginal
ultrasound is then performed while a small quantity of saline
is instilled into the uterus. The uterus is expanded by
the fluid, allowing the ultrasonic imaging of abnormalities
such as fibroids, polyps or adhesions. Fluid observed in
the pelvic cavity indicates that at least one tube is patent.
