ICSI
ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, is performed
for men having extremely low sperm counts or extremely high
percentages of abnormal shaped sperm or nonmoving sperm.
Some men may have no sperm at all due to absence or damage
of the duct system that allows the flow of sperm from the
testicle. Other men who have had an unsuccessful vasectomy
reversal may also suffer from this problem. In the ICSI
procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the
egg. This is accomplished in the laboratory using a high-powered
microscope and small glass injection needles. The process
is controlled by an embryologist using precision equipment.
High fertilization and pregnancy rates are usually seen.
