Fertility Treatment
Depending
on needs, couples have a choice from the following fertility
procedures:
1. Treatment with clomiphene citrate (fertility pill)
2. Treatment with hormone injections (usually Pergonal, Humegon,
Fertinex, or Metrodin)
3. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), including In
Vitro Fertilization (IVF, or "test tube baby") and
related treatments known as
GIFT and ZIFT.
4. IVF with micromanipulation of sperm and eggs. These treatments
include ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) for
severe male factor infertility and assisted hatching of embryos
in some selected couples.
Treatments with clomiphene or with hormone injections work best
when combined with intrauterine inseminations - the placement
of washed sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation.
No treatment is guaranteed to work first time; thus, it is not
unusual for 3 to 6 months of treatment before pregnancy is achieved.
