Why is egg donation and surrogacy necessary?

As a woman enters her 40s the success rates of in vitro fertilization do tend to decrease. If the hormone profile suggests that success with IVF is unlikely, or if the woman has undergone a premature menopausal state, the use of an egg donor is suggested. Remarkably, simple hormonal treatments can allow the woman's womb to safely carry the donated egg which has been fertilized with her husband's sperm.
